1 Peter 3:5 For this is the way the holy women of the past who put their hope in God used to adorn themselves. They submitted themselves to their own husbands

Peter turns to the past in reflection of “the holy women of the past.” In verse 6, he will point out the example of Sarah. These women are characterized by putting their hope in God. The assumption is that they did not put their hope in things of this world, especially what they looked like or how they dressed. They also submitted to their husbands in love and respect. Peter is calling for Christian women to live in simplicity like the heroes of the past.

Clothing and hair styles are constantly changing, sometimes in bazaar ways. What should believers do when it comes to dress and culture? That can be a challenging questions, especially for those who put a lot of their self-worth in how they look. First, we can find our worth in God and not this world. We can realize that God loves us and created us in a special and unique way. Second, we need to realize that the world will lie to us and make us think that our worth is measured by how we look. It is exceedingly difficult to overcome this deception. I have only met a few people (especially women) who have found a balance with this. Third, we can simplify our lives, including our clothing. We do not need to spend huge amounts of money for the latest designer item. Fourth, we can balance all of this with the expectations of culture and dress in simple ways that do not distract from our inner persons.
