James 1:5 If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him.
When we face trials, often we do not know what to do. We feel helpless. We may have this feeling about many things in life, such as important decisions. I am not one to assume that “this or that is God’s will.” I DO want to know God’s plan for me or my loved ones. Sometimes the direction is clear. Other times, however, it seems as if God allows us to choose which direction to go or what decision to make. It can be a dangerous thing with often empty or tearful results when we try to go our own direction or try to solve a problem with our own efforts. Behind this verse is the continued theme of faith. Faith is embedded in the word “ask.” God wants us to ask for wisdom. What is wisdom? It is a deep understanding supported by faith and conviction and based upon knowledge of God’s character (loving and holy), how things work in the world (both the good creation and sin’s affect upon it), and the deep needs of humanity. Wisdom begins with and is supported by worship of God in humility. Prayer should have a way of bringing us to the point trust no matter what the situation. God will give us deeper insight into His ways, the way the world operates, and the needs of people, when we seek Him and His kingdom.
