2 Peter 3:8 But do not overlook this one fact, beloved, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.
Some people take this verse literally and mathematically: 24 hours = 1000 years. That means 1 God hour = 41 human years. That literalism is missing the point of what Peter is trying to communicate in this verse. The key idea is that time is not a factor for God. Some philosophies make God in time and part of time. The Bible is clear that God enters into time in Jesus Christ who came at just the right point in history. Since time is not a factor for God, any delay is not a delay but done on purpose. God’s timing is the best. In the context, Peter has been writing about Jesus’ second coming. A delay should not mean that God has forgotten or will not fulfill his promise. Jesus will come again at just the right moment just as his first coming was at just the right moment. The principle in this verse can be applied to many things of our lives, especially prayer. We may feel rushed, like we need an answer today, but God sees the whole, the big picture, and will do what is most loving and consistent with his character.
