Hebrews 1:10-12 He also says, “In the beginning, Lord, you laid the foundations of the earth, and the heavens are the work of your hands. They will perish, but you remain; they will all wear out like a garment. You will roll them up like a robe; like a garment they will be changed. But you remain the same and your years will never end.”
The author now quotes from Psalm 102:25-27. The context indicates that this is another quote from the Old Testament (“the prophets,” v. 1) about the Son. This verse says many significant things about Jesus, the Son. First, the Son was created the heavens and the earth. This agrees with John 1:3 and Colossians 1:16. That makes three witnesses to the role of the Son in creation. This is a significant claim that 1) shows the deity of Jesus and 2) is a profound theological claim about how creation came into existence. A second major claim of this quote is the eternality of the Son. The author uses the image of a garment that eventually wears out. Creation as we see it is wearing out. Resources are slowly being depleted. Everything deteriorates as time moves on. The heavens and earth will be changed. This is a similar thought to 2 Peter 3:10 and other passages that describe how creation will be remade. A third claim is that the Son remains the same forever. He is eternal and time has no effect. This gives us assurance in Jesus as the truth that does not change. This quotation and the others in this opening chapter help us get a clear glimpse of the person in whom we can believe. This strengthens our faith.
