Hebrews 2:2-3 For since the message spoken through angels was binding, and every violation and disobedience received its just punishment, how shall we escape if we ignore so great a salvation? This salvation, which was first announced by the Lord, was confirmed to us by those who heard him.
This verse is a strong warning about drifting away, which can happen if we are distracted and our attention is given to other things (v. 1). Verse 2 begins with a strong statement about the message to which the angels witnesses and about which they spoke. This message from ch. 1 is about Jesus, the Son. It is a serious thing not to listen to God’s messengers. Ignoring or rejecting this message will receive “just punishment.” God is just which is the response of God’s holiness. Verse 3 gives the warning: we cannot ignore the great offer of grace through Jesus that God offers to us. The message has been given. Why ignore it? People reject the message for many reasons including disbelief, blindness because of the temptations of the world, personal comforts, prejudices, past experiences, being deceived, laziness, and others. Jesus brought the message of salvation to many eyewitnesses. The author is a second generation believer who heard the message of salvation from the eyewitnesses. The author has mentioned three primary proofs or supports for the message of salvation so far in the letter: 1) the Old Testament prophets, 2) the angels, and 3) the eyewitnesses. All three of these point to Jesus as the supreme and sovereign Son of God and source of salvation. The book will continue to develop this idea and help the readers (us) understand this salvation and call for the readers (us) to embrace and believe it. We today have received this salvation. Not everyone understands it, even in the church. Many people of the world ignore it, just like in the early times. We must not lose heart as we strive to keep our faith strong and growing.
