Luke 9:10-11 10And when the apostles returned, they related to him all the things they had done. And bringing them along, he withdrew privately to a town called Bethsaida. 11When the crowds learned it, they followed him, and welcoming them he spoke to them about the kingdom of God and cured those who had need of healing.
After the successful mission, Jesus took the twelve apostles away for what appears to have been a retreat. Perhaps it was a time of reflection and review of what they had experienced in their preaching and healing mission. Often, after a long trip or intense ministry experience, a time of rest can also be helpful. Describing the same story, Mark 6:31 specifically mentions the word “rest.” However, Jesus and his disciples got no rest as they came to Bethsaida because word quickly spread they were coming to town.
It was a splendid experience for all in Bethsaida because of the open reception the people gave to Jesus. Bethsaida was located north of the Sea of Galilee on the eastern side of the Jordan River. Because they followed Jesus, they received insights about God’s kingdom and experienced healing. Verse 11 gives a model of discipleship. The sequence is significant. First, the people learned about Jesus. Second, they followed him. Third, they experienced Jesus’ welcome. Fourth, they heard the message of God’s kingdom. And fifth, they experienced healing. These verses provide the setting for the next miracle story.
