1 John 5:9 Since we receive the witness of people, the witness of God is greater. Because it is the witness of God because it has witnessed about his son.
People want proof for God’s existence. The greatest witnesses are those John mentions in v. 7 that come from the life and death of Jesus and the confirmation of this by the Holy Spirit to those who believe. Faith in Jesus Christ is the open door to accepting God’s existence. This is more than intellectual acknowledge of a creator. That is the first step, but this confirmation of God’s existence goes even deeper. The message about Jesus is confirmed by the presence of Jesus within us. Since the early church, the Holy Spirit has testified of the truth of the gospel to those willing to listen.
In our individual lives, we may have doubts about God’s existence. The Holy Spirit will not leave us isolated and alone in this search for God. The Spirit will remind us of our past moments of faith. These times will bring refreshing to us. There are two special ways this can happen in reflection of v. 7. First, when we see the baptism of new believers, it reminds us of our own baptism. The can be a key time of recommitment for us. These times may be infrequent, depending on the evangelism of our church. A second way is through the Lord’s Supper. Each time we eat the Supper, the Holy Spirit can remind us of our faith decision. This time can be a “means of grace” by which God helps us grow in our faith and commitment to him.
