Revelation 2:15-16 So also you have some who hold the teaching of the Nicolaitans. Therefore repent. If not, I will come to you soon and war against them with the sword of my mouth.
The church in Pergamum was struggling with false teachings and deceptions. These were tempting them to compromise with their culture, especially in the areas of idolatry and immorality. These believers needed to do two things: 1) come to realize their sin and repent; and 2) make sure they know the truth, the positive direction to go, so they can discern what is false. They need to be careful that they are not deceived by the teaching of this heretical group called the Nicolaitans. If they fail, the sword from Jesus’ mouth will come and war against them. They will not receive blessings but condemnation. God’s presence symbolized in the lampstand could be withdrawn. Sword of Jesus’ words can either be a blessing to help against the onslaught of culture or it can become judgment and condemnation if they fail to change.
There is a strong lesson for us today. Culture is a powerful force that conforms us to its image often without us knowing it. Since I am removed from my home culture, I can be more objective about what I see back in that culture. I notice people’s responses and activities on Facebook. There are clear patterns of compromise, even among believers. I am sure these people do not see this in their own lives. The negative side of culture creeps into anyone’s life. We have to step back and allow the word of God to penetrate our lives and be our guide. It can guide us and help us critique our culture and our own lives.
