Revelation 8:8-9 The second angel sounded his trumpet, and something like a huge mountain, all ablaze, was thrown into the sea. A third of the sea turned into blood, a third of the living creatures in the sea died, and a third of the ships were destroyed.

The description of the object thrown into the sea sounds like a large comet. The first affect of this is the water turning into blood. This recalls the first plague upon Egypt of the waters being turned into blood. This was the first warning to the Egyptians to let the Hebrew slaves go. Blood signifies both life and death in the Bible. This blood poisons the waters of the sea and one-third of the creatures die, possibly from the sediment that is disturbed in the water, making it impossible for the creatures to breathe. This object will produce a massive tsunami that will wipe out of a third of the ships. The number of ships that cross the oceans of the number would be large. Today, there are about 2 million ships on the ocean at any given time.

The first trumpet affected the land and the second the sea. Just like in ancient Egypt, people can explain these phenomena as natural occurrences. People will refuse to heed God’s warnings. The destruction of this much commerce and marine life will devastate the world. People may blame God but will refuse to repent. Their faith in God will only be as an object of hatred. The only thing believers can do is carry out the mission God has given us now. We will need to put our truth in God and God’s sovereignty.
