Revelation 8:12 The fourth angel sounded his trumpet, and a third of the sun was struck, a third of the moon, and a third of the stars, so that a third of them turned dark. A third of the day was without light, and also a third of the night.
The affects of the trumpets have gone from the sea to the land and now to the sky. The ancient people did not have the concept of stars being suns, but that does not impact this verse. The comets and possibly volcanoes that have caused chaos with the first three trumpets have affected the air. I remember when Mount St. Helens erupted on May 18, 1980. It was a Sunday afternoon and the sky in eastern Washington turned dark. The street lights came on. It was almost like night. People could not breath outside. The time frame for this darkness was at least one third of the day and night. This is the type of thing that will happen with the fourth trumpet. The impact of this would send modern life into chaos. Our modern life has many benefits to it, many nice things. We as a human race have become more or less lazy. It would not take much to tip the cart into chaos. So much of modern life relies on the delicate balance of commerce, delivery, and electronics, especially in the major cities.
As believers, we must put our faith and hope in God, not in things of this world. The things of this world can easily be snatched away. Our lives are delicate. The social nets are not always that strong. Many people of the world today experience these hardships when disasters happen. In the Philippines, typhoons can send a whole city or region into a tailspin. We do not know when or how this fourth trumpet will be sounded. If we are around, it will be a difficult time. As we await God’s plan, we must be faithful with whatever has been given to us.
