Revelation 9:1-2 The fifth angel sounded his trumpet, and I saw a star that had fallen from the sky to the earth. The star was given the key to the shaft of the Abyss. 2 When he opened the Abyss, smoke rose from it like the smoke from a gigantic furnace. The sun and sky were darkened by the smoke from the Abyss.
The fifth trumpet is sounded. This one will lead to more havoc on earth. John sees a start fall from the sky. This star is something that causes great smoke to cover the sky. How do we interpret this? Symbolically or literally? Could the symbol refer to something literal? Could this be another comet or now an astroid? It seems that this star will come from space and be noticeable because it will produce smoke like a furnace. It will darken the sky once again. An abyss in the Greek describes a deep hole. This object will cause great smoke and produce a deep hole.
It is difficult to find any spiritual meaning with these verses except in the wider context of what Revelation is communicating. It is telling us two things: 1) be warned and 2) be prepared by being one of God’s people. This is the message consistent in any apocalyptic literature such as Revelation. Although we may not understand what John is seeing here, we can be curious and take warning.
