2 Peter 1:3 His divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of him who called us to his own glory and excellence,
Do you ever feel overwhelmed in life, especially in the spiritual realm? We are called to be holy and perfect, but in our limited humanity we do not not understand what this means. This verse is significant because it shows that the way we can become who God created us to be is through His divine power. This is the same power that created the universe with a word. Theologically, this “word” was the Son, through whom all things were created (Colossians 1:16). This power is now available to us through faith in the Son. This power helps us live our lives in victory and godliness, not for selfish reasons such as our own pride, but for God’s purposes and kingdom. Victory does not always mean health, wealth, and prosperity. Peter’s first letter clearly shows that believers should expect suffering. Our victory is more in the spiritual realm of victory over sin which will result in godly living. This is a lifestyle that mirrors God’s righteous character particularly as seen in Jesus of Nazareth. This is a new life that lifts us above the corruption of this world. This will result in the knowledge of God that has the purpose of glorifying God and not us. Why would God want glorified? Because it is through this that we truly come to know and experience God’s love for us. Only when God is glorified do we find ourselves lifted up from the corruption of this world.
