Hebrews 4:9-10 There remains, then, a Sabbath-rest for the people of God; for anyone who enters God’s rest also rests from their works, just as God did from his.
There is a new type of rest available to those who trust in Jesus. This type of rest is a form of Sabbath. Theologians have debated about what this Sabbath rest is. In the context of Hebrews, this rest involves an end to spiritual struggle, doubts, and fears. It is freedom from sin’s bondage. It results in deep peace that will impact all of life. This rest can be called the sanctified life that has fully embraced God’s promises of life in Jesus. This new life is not experienced through human effort, such as obedience to the law, but by allowing God to do a deep, inner work in our hearts through the Holy Spirit. We must come to the point of trusting in God’s promises stopping our struggle to overcome temptation by our own strength. If we do not move forward spiritually, we are in danger of hardening our hearts against the Holy Spirit. We must heed what the Spirit says (Hebrews 3:7).
