Hebrews 4:13 And no creature is hidden from his sight, but all are naked and exposed to the eyes of him to whom we must give account.

God’s word exposes the deepest part of our souls. We cannot hide from God. No creature can hide from God. Sometimes, we fool ourselves into thinking that God does not know our thinking or what we do in secret. This verse is a sober reminder of the sovereignty of God. God knows our thoughts and motives. The good news is that God is gracious, loving, and slow to anger. Otherwise, we would all be lost and without hope. But as Paul reminds the Romans in Romans 6:1, God’s grace should not give us an excuse for sin. We cannot hide behind God’s willingness to forgive us. The author of Hebrews warns the readers later in ch. 6 about neglecting or even rejecting faith in Christ. The reality is that we must give an account for our actions or lack of faith. If we did not have the next verse, this would surely be a difficult and hopeless situation. It would be a burden that would drive any thinking person into insanity and depression. Sometimes we need a healthy wakeup call to the judgment of God. God’s word in the Bible is the first wakeup to sin. We want to take care of our sin right away, “today” (v. 7).
