Hebrews 7:3 He is without father or mother or genealogy, having neither beginning of days nor end of life, but resembling the Son of God he continues a priest forever.

This verse gives us more description of Melchizedek. The key idea in these verses is the eternality of this priest king. It could be argued that the author has a selective reading and interpretation of the Old Testament. Melchizedek just seems to appear in the Bible for just a short moment and then disappears from history. The interpretive method of the author is not the key point of this verse. Rather, we must look at what he is trying to communicate. The Bible does not record anything else about this priest king. The author can build on the symbolism of Melchizedek’s name and where he was king and add that he is beyond time. This provides another important connection and “type” for Jesus as the Son of God. Jesus also has no beginning or end. The author is not concerned here about Jesus’ earthly parents, Joseph and Mary. Rather, in his thinking, Jesus is the eternal incarnate one who came to earth representing God. The author again emphasizes the divinity of Jesus. The author is keeping two key ideas in mind: Jesus as the divine Son of God and Jesus the perfect human who had total faith and obedience to God the Father. These two foci qualify Jesus to be the High Priest.
