Hebrews 12:5-6 And have you forgotten the exhortation that addresses you as sons? “My son, do not regard lightly the discipline of the Lord, nor be weary when reproved by him. 6 For the Lord disciplines the one he loves, and chastises every son whom he receives.”
God’s response to our disobedience and lack of faith is discipline. God brings things into our lives to help us realize our sin. What does this discipline look like? It is determine this at times. God does not cause evil in the world but he may allow difficult things to happen to us. We may interpret these things as evil because they cause us discomfort or pain. The author has total confidence in God’s sovereignty and control of all things. We should recall the author’s opening thoughts about the Son in 1:3: “he upholds the universe by the word of his power.” Paul told the Romans in 8:28: “And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.” The author quotes Proverbs 3:11-12 for support to show that God’s discipline is a result of his love. Whatever God does or allows in our lives, it is out of love and is for our good. We must trust that God will see us through any difficulties we face. The critical issue is one of faith. God’s discipline helps us grow stronger. Like exercise which can be painful but results in increased strength, our difficulties in life provide opportunities for our faith and trust in God to grow stronger. God will not leave us during these times but stands close by and is a constant resource if we will only turn to him in faith.
