Hebrews 13:5-6 Keep your life free from love of money, and be content with what you have, for he has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.” So we can confidently say, “The Lord is my helper; I will not fear; what can man do to me?”

Money is a great blessing or a great curse. Many people never seem to have enough of it. Others too easily waste what they have on materialism. Paul wrote to Timothy that the love of money can be a root for evil (1 Timothy 6:10). Loving money takes our eyes off of God and places it on things of this world. Contentment is only possible when we find meaning for life in God. Things of this world can easily be stolen, broken, or take our time and energy to get, preserve, and use. Some comforts in life are nice and should be seen as blessings from God. The book of Ecclesiastes gives a humble and realistic view of material things. This book reminds us that in the end, what really matters is the fear of the Lord. Contentment comes when we realize that God is always with us, even when we lack many things in our life. having God with us will help us keep the eternal perspective. God does not leave us, even when it seems that everything and everyone else has. God’s presence is not always experienced in material or physical ways but in spiritual. We can rest on the promise that God is with us. He is our helper and advocate. We have nothing to fear, even those who want to persecute us. We can find peace in the potential pain and persecution. These verses call us to re-evaluate our priorities and upon what resource(s) we base our life. The only sure foundation is Jesus Christ as Lord.
