Jude 6 And the angels who did not stay within their own position of authority, but left their proper dwelling, he has kept in eternal chains under gloomy darkness until the judgment of the great day—
Jude’s next illustration of his central point that there is danger in rejecting Jesus as Sovereign and Lord is the fall of the angels. Some of the angels chose to go against God’s sovereignty and go their own way. This verse implies that angels have some degree of free will. Free will is required for love. Love cannot be forced. By leaving their proper dwelling, these angels showed that they loved themselves more than they loved God. The consequences for walking away from God are severe. They are confined by eternal chains until judgment. This is a strong warning for those who would reject the sovereignty of Jesus. The same outcome the angels experienced will be the same for those who reject Jesus. Judgment is real and must be taken seriously. We do not need to live in fear, for fear has to do with punishment (1 John 4:18). When we are walking with the Lord in faith, we can have no fear of punishment.
