1 Corinthians 1:31
Therefore, as it is written: “Let the one who boasts boast in the Lord.”
It seems to me that the natural tendency of people is to make themselves look as good as possible in order to be accepted by other people, or perhaps to advance a personal agenda. There are those who have been so abused or neglected that this natural tendency has shifted to doing whatever they can to service. In either situation, there is another alternative that provides a person with the type of self-worth for which we have been created. Paul is moving in this direction in this passage and will end ch. 2 with it: we can have the mindset characterized in Christ. Our “boasting” can be turned into praise to the one who can remake us into new creations in his likeness. Our boasting is in the cross. This new way of thinking both gives us hope for the future and purpose for the present. No matter how the world has treated us, we find new self-worth in the one who loves us so much, he laid down his life for us.
