Romans 4:6-8 just as David also speaks of the blessing of the one to whom God counts righteousness apart from works: 7 “Blessed are those whose lawless deeds are forgiven, and whose sins are covered; 8 blessed is the man against whom the Lord will not count his sin.”
Paul quotes from Psalm 32:1-2 as further support for the idea that faith is necessary for our salvation. It is challenging to see the connection between the psalm and Paul’s point about works. There is a blessing in experiencing God’s forgiveness through faith. Seeking salvation through faith takes the burden off of us. If we have to earn our salvation through following the law, it becomes a burden and can lead to legalism. The law is too heavy for any person to bear because it is impossible to follow it good enough to earn salvation. The law was not meant to bring salvation but to show the saved how to live. It confirms our salvation and guides us into obedient action. The law is a safeguard and warning about sin and the dangers of disobedience. Seeking righteousness through faith brings peace and joy. Faith releases us from the snare of sin and self because we put our trust in the Lord and his guidance, and not our own understanding and strength (Proverbs 3:5-6).
