Romans 5:10 For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, now that we are reconciled, shall we be saved by his life.

This is a comparison between one thing that is amazing to one thing that even more amazing. If this is true, how more more is this true. Jesus death brought reconciliation with God by opening the way of forgiveness from our past sins. We were God’s enemies by being in rebellion and going our own ways. We refused his light and following the way of flesh, idolatry, and pride. Reconciliation is the restoring of a broken relationship. We could not do this on our own because we were stuck in our sins. It required something outside of the fallen human condition to fix this. Jesus provided the perfect and sinless sacrifice for us. He was the only one worthy to atone for our sins. His resurrection confirmed the effectiveness of his atonement. By rising from the dead, he showed power over sin and death, our worst enemies. This verse is Paul’s gospel simply stated. There is a lot of theology that stands behind this statement. This verse shows how God saved us from our past and the sins we have committed and how God will save us in the future from the power of sin and death. Chapter 6 will show how we can live in victory during the present moment.
