Romans 8:5 For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit.
We have two choices in what path we will follow for our lives. The path of the flesh is controlled by our natural fleshly urges that have been distorted by our fallen sinful nature focused on ourselves, self-preservation, and self-sovereignty. The mind controlled by the flesh seeks things that satisfy selfishness and pride. The other path is to follow the leading of the Holy Spirit. This is a choice we make with our minds. It is an act of the will. “Set” has the connotation of decision. The mind controlled by the Spirit acknowledges God’s sovereignty and seeks to please God through a life consecrated to his purposes. These two opposing ways of life will be evident in behaviors and attitudes (Gal. 5:17-23).
