1 Corinthians 15:56-57 The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. 57 But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.
Verse 56 gives the human problem. The relationship of death, sin, and the law is significantly theologically. Sin brought death to Adam and Eve. The pull of death leads sin to exert itself in the way of trying to fulfill distorted pleasures of the flesh, leading to being bound and enslaved by sin as a power. Sin is revealed through the law. The law clearly sets out God’s expectations. Because of our inherited rebellious and selfish hearts, we break God’s laws, which further moves us into death.
Verse 57 gives the answer to the human problem. Paul gives this answer in the form of a praise: “thanks be to God.” God is the author and source of our victory. God’s plan since before the creation of the world was to work through the coming, death, and resurrection of the incarnated Son. Our victory comes only through our Lord Jesus Christ. Each of these three descriptions is significant. It was upon his resurrection that Jesus was proclaimed as Lord. His resurrection confirmed his lordship evident throughout his ministry. Jesus came with power and authority, but not everyone recognized this. Jesus is also the “savior,” the one who make it possible for others to be raised to new and eternal life. Finally, he is the Messiah who came to reveal God’s plan and kingdom. Only those who put their full faith in Jesus can have victory. This is a powerful message of hope for the Corinthians who were confused about resurrection.
