1 Corinthians 16:15-16  Now I urge you, brothers—you know that the household of Stephanas were the first converts in Achaia, and that they have devoted themselves to the service of the saints— 16 be subject to such as these, and to every fellow worker and laborer.

The household of Stephanas provides a role model for the Corinthians. We find out several interesting things in these verses about this household. First is simply the idea of this being a household. A well-to-do household of that time could include the nuclear family, slaves, and other extended family. There is no way to know who were part of this household. What is more significant is that everyone came to believe. Paul mentions baptizing them in 1:16. The two ideas are important for understanding baptism. Baptism is always accompanied with faith in Christ in the New Testament. Those who are baptized also believe. There is no evidence of infant baptism, which was a several centuries later in the church.

Second, this household was the first converts in Achaia, the area of Corinth. Acts 18 indicates that Paul first went to the Jews. Stephanas is more of a Greek name than Jewish name, but many Jews had adopted Greek names, so we cannot tell if this was a Jewish or Gentile family. Whatever the case, they were open to the gospel and received it in faith.

Third, their faith was shown in action by how they devoted themselves to caring for other believers. The word “saints” is used for Christians. Paul gives a description of “saints” in 1:2. Saints have been sanctified to Christ by setting themselves apart from the world and devoting themselves fully to Christ. They also call upon the name of the Lord, which shows worship and faith. This household has invested in other believers and served them.

Fourth, this household of believers set a good example to the Corinthians. The church could look to people like this for how they should behave. It is noteworthy that Paul gives this household as an example directly after writing about the need to do everything in love. This family is an example of love for others by how they support other believers. The church would be stronger by looking to people who set good examples in service, love, and respect. But the church should also not just treat certain groups with respect like this household, but should treat all believers with love and respect.
