Ephesians 4:30 30And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.
This verse could be linked to the previous one about bad speech (with the linking “and”), but it also can stand on its own as a timeless principle. Grieving the Holy Spirit is the root problem behind all of sin. Grieve (lypeite) can mean to cause severe mental or emotional distress, vex, irritate, offend, insult, or make sad. The word as used in this verse and theological context means more than an emotional sadness but expresses even a disappointment that people reject the leading and conviction of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit will guide us and warn us about sin, righteousness, and judgment (John 16:8). When we listen, we will experience deeper fellowship with God and grow into the likeness of Jesus Christ. If we do not listen, the devil will get a foot in the door, and sin will take over. The worst thing for us to do is to reject the Holy Spirit, because by doing this, we are rejecting the light of God.
The Holy Spirit is God’s promise to us. Our experience of the Spirit in this life is a guarantee of eternal life. The Spirit bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God (Romans 8:16). The word for sealed means a guarantee that what is to follow is authentic and sure. It is like the seal on a letter or a notary signature of authenticity. We know that we are saved and citizens of God’s kingdom by the inner peace the Holy Spirit gives us. But if we have doubts of this because of sin and rebellion, we must confess this and repent (1 John 1:9). The Holy Spirit is the stop-gate and warning sign against sin. We can develop a sensitivity and awareness of the Holy Spirit. The primary way to do this is through reading God’s word and letting it become part of who we are. The Bible becomes the light for our path (Psalm 119:105), and the Holy Spirit is the one who holds the light and holds our hand as we walk the path set before us. This is the essence of the holy life of the new person we become in Jesus Christ.
