1 Corinthians 10:11-13
Now these things happened to them as an example, but they were written down for our instruction, on whom the end of the ages has come. Therefore let anyone who thinks that he stands take heed lest he fall. No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.
All people face temptation. We do not need to give in to temptation because God gives us an escape route. What is this way of escape? There are several resources for this:
- The Bible: In the case of this chapter, Paul lays out the example of the ancient Israelites who failed to listen to God in the desert.
- Past Experiences: We should not make the same mistakes. We can also see the bad experiences of others and avoid their mistakes. Learn and use wisdom.
- Expectation of Christ’s return: We should live with a sense of expectation.
- We are citizens of God’s kingdom which has broken into this period. We have a new source of power that can lead us to victory over sin.
- Worship: It is noteworthy that the eucharist will be mentioned in the verses following this.
- The Holy Spirit will work through all of these to remind and convict us.
