1 Corinthians 10:21-22

I do not want you to be participants with demons. You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons. You cannot partake of the table of the Lord and the table of demons. Shall we provoke the Lord to jealousy? Are we stronger than he?

We have to make a choice of who or what we will worship, and then we must act on this. This is not a one time experience but must be a daily choice. For the Corinthians who lived in a cultural environment full of idols and pagan worship, they had to separate themselves and be holy. This was not an easy choice. It likely caused them social stress, alienation, and rejection. Eventually, early Christians like them faced persecution and death.

What can draw us to Christ is coming to His table, joining in with others, and remembering what He has done for us. Christ makes an exclusive claim on us. We are His. We were purchased from slavery to sin, idolatry, and immorality. We have been given a new life. When we dabble with the old life, we put ourselves at great risk for the deception and entrapment of demons. The weak Corinthians had to flee totally their old life of idolatry. It was a temptation to them.

We have two defenses: flee from and flee to. Flee from sin (idolatry) and flee to Christ. There is no middle place, no lukewarm, no one foot in the world and one foot in Christ. If we try this, we will face temptations and deceit and be pulled into the world. Total commitment. Total consecration. Entire sanctification.
