Titus 1:6 6If anyone is blameless, the husband of one wife, having children who believe and are not open to the charge of being wild or disobedient.
Paul now lists twelve qualifications for the elders Titus must appoint. Strong leadership is needed for any new mission to be successful. Paul lists qualifications that have to do more with personal integrity and honor than strong personality. At the top of the list is being blameless (anengklētos) or “above reproach.” This is the personal quality of having with such a good reputation that no one can say anything bad about a person. This was an important quality for the overseers in 1 Timothy 3:2.
Titus needed to find leaders who had strong marriages and family life. They should be faithful to their wives and not womanizers, and good guides to their children. The effectiveness of the modeling and discipleship of the elders should be evident in how their children live. Leadership in the family will directly impact effectiveness in ministry. Being wildrefers to careless abandon that shows up in debauchery and degenerative activities. Being disobedient appears a person’s refusal to accept authority and living in rebellion against God’s commands.
