Genesis 1:1-3a: “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters. And God said . . .”

From the beginning of time, God has been in communication with creation. When God speaks, things happen. Nothing is the same once the word of God is given. We can experience that communication in different ways. If we refuse to listen, the word of God becomes destructive because of God’s holiness.

Anything that comes from God is holy, and that would include His communication. When the holy word is rejected because of disbelief or idolatry (let’s just call it “sin”), the holiness of God reveals the unholiness of the human response. Isaiah recognized that when he saw God on the throne and said, “Woe is me! For I am lost; for I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips; for my eyes have seen the King, the Lord of hosts!” (Isa. 6:5).

If we listen to the word, we will experience the grace of God. God’s grace always transforms when we accept its power in our lives. The same power that created the universe is the same power available to recreate each and every one of us into the image of God in which Adam and Eve were created (Gen. 1:26-27).
