Revelation 14:1-5 Then I looked, and there before me was the Lamb, standing on Mount Zion, and with him 144,000 who had his name and his Father’s name written on their foreheads. 2 And I heard a sound from heaven like the roar of rushing waters and like a loud peal of thunder. The sound I heard was like that of harpists playing their harps. 3 And they sang a new song before the throne and before the four living creatures and the elders. No one could learn the song except the 144,000 who had been redeemed from the earth. 4 These are those who did not defile themselves with women, for they remained virgins. They follow the Lamb wherever he goes. They were purchased from among mankind and offered as firstfruits to God and the Lamb.5 No lie was found in their mouths; they are blameless.
This is a brief moment of encouragement and glimpse of final blessedness before judgment. This vision is a contrast to the beasts of the previous chapter. The first beast came from the sea and the second from land. In this passage, the Lamb comes from Mount Zion, the dwelling place of God’s presence and the temple in the Old Testament. The select 144,000 of ch. 7 appear again here. This number is likely symbolic of those from every tribe and nation who have been faithful to God. The mark of the Lamb on their foreheads is in contrast to mark of the beast. This mark could stand for ownership, loyalty, security, dependence, safety, allegiance and commitment. This group of people know the new song of the redeemed. We get further description of these people as being virgins. This implies that they remained morally pure. The implied timeless exhortation is that the readers of this book likewise should remain morally pure and not compromise with the culture. This has been a strong theme throughout Revelation. Their moral quality is also seen in their integrity and honesty. These people are purchased as the first fruits, the symbolic representation of all who follow. They are the examples for the rest of God’s people. We should also remain pure morally (within marriage) and be honest. These are the opposites of what the devil and beasts will advocate. This world is full of immorality and deceit. God’s people must live differently.
