1 John 2:13 I am writing to you, fathers, because you have known him who is from the beginning.
I am writing to you, young men, because you have overcome the evil one.

John continues his poetic reminder to different groups within the church, covering different ages that also represent different stages of maturity in the faith. The verb tense for writing continues the present tense begun in verse 12. First, fathers represent those older with experience. They are mature in their faith and have consistently walked with the Lord. Have known (egnōkate) is in the perfect tense and implies that the fathers’ relationship with Jesus is current and has been growing for some time.

Yet, those older in their faith still need encouragement. They need to remain faithful and walk in the light of Jesus. Anyone’s love can grow weak over time, so John’s reminder in this letter should inspire them to grow in their love. Sometimes older people can get cranky, impatient, and difficult to be around. They are often accused of being set in their ways. They may say they love, but by their actions, especially towards younger generations, it is apparent that they think mostly about themselves. There are significant challenges to overcome as one ages, especially in one’s attitude towards others.

The next group addressed is young men (neaniskoi). The age of this group is difficult to determine but generally could include older teens to young adults. Spiritually, this group may represent those who believe but face challenges due to a lack of experience and maturity. Different temptations come to us at different times in our lives. The evil one likes to pick on young people, especially those young in the faith, because the pull of the old life, the world, and sin is still strong upon them. Young people need the help of those around them in order to stay strong and walk in the light. The young in John’s community have gained increasing victory by overcoming (perfect tense) the devil. They have found their source of life, purpose, and guide in their faith in Jesus.
