Mark 1:23-28\u00a023<\/sup>And immediately there was in their synagogue a man with an unclean spirit and he cried out, 24<\/sup>saying, “What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are\u2014the Holy One of God.\u201d 25<\/sup>But Jesus rebuked him, saying, \u201cBe quiet, and come out of him!\u201d 26<\/sup>And the unclean spirit after shaking him and crying out with a loud voice, it came out of him. 27<\/sup>And they all were amazed, so that they discussed among themselves, saying, \u201cWhat is this? A new teaching with authority! He commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey him.\u201d 28<\/sup>And at once his fame spread everywhere throughout all the surrounding region of Galilee. <\/em><\/p>\n

The scene with Jesus teaching in the synogogue continues, but a man with an unclean spirit bursts out interrupting Jesus. Unclean <\/em>or impure spirit refers to a demon. Perhaps Mark could not call this spirit a demon because of the setting of a synogogue, a house of God.\u00a0It is odd that a demon-possessed man would be in a place considered holy. The sacredness of a place does not exempt it from having people with unclean spirits being present. An “unclean” spirit is the opposite of the “Holy” Spirit. In this case, the powerful and holy presence of Jesus exposed the darkness.<\/p>\n

The unclean spirit cried out through its host. The plural we<\/em>\u00a0used in this cry suggests that this unclean spirit was part of a group, but the use of the singular I\u00a0<\/em>shows that there was one entity.\u00a0Jesus does not confront the man but the demon who was controlling him.\u00a0The demone knew Jesus’ identity. It knew where Jesus came from physically, Nazareth, and it knew where he came from spiritually as the\u00a0Holy One of God<\/em>. It knew his power and that he could indeed destroy it. The declaration of the unclear spirit confirms the voice from heaven and adds more to the readers’ understanding of who Jesus is.<\/p>\n

Jesus\u2019 typical response to demons was to rebuke<\/em>\u00a0them. Rebuke<\/em> (epetim\u0113sen<\/em>) means censure, warning, or prohibition (1:15; 3:12; 9:25). Jesus had full control of the situation. He did not use magic, any encantation or formula, and no special rituals to cast the demon out, just simply a verbal command. He basically told the spirit to “shut up.” It has caused enough problems. Another possibility is that he did not want people to know his identity yet. He wanted them to come to put their genuine faith in him and not just be awed by claims of divinity. He had many years of ministry left. The unclean spirit had no choice but to obey. When the Son of God speaks, everything must respond. The way the man was freed was not pleasant to watch as he had a type of seizure. The demon did not leave without a fight. It wanted to cause as much harm as it could as it left.<\/p>\n

The story takes an interesting turn with the crowd’s response to the exorcism. Their words indicate suprise and suggests that they did not know what to do with Jesus. They murmered to one another, not knowing what to make of the whole thing. The\u00a0demon knows who Jesus is (verse 24), but the crowd does not (verse 27). The folks in church did not know what to do about this teacher who spoke with so much authority that even the demons had to obey. They were not used to this. The result given in verse 28 shows the people’s enthusiasm and excitement. There was something new happening, but the challenge was that few people would put their full faith in Jesus, especially the religious leaders. The evidence was right before them, but how would they respond? They acted like people today who see the hand of God but refuse to believe. They would rather sit in their comfortable pews or easy chairs where they can be in control rather than letting Jesus be Lord.<\/p>\n
