The eyes can be tricky because they are attracted to things of beauty and power. The devil offered Jesus all the kingdoms of the world. How the devil did that is irrelevant to the temptation, but as the “god of this world” (2 Corinthians 4:4) thinks he has control of the kingdoms of the world, but even he is deceived by this assumption because God is sovereign of all kings and kingdoms. Satan is sovereign only over those who allow him to gain control of their lives or listen to his deception. God has allowed the devil a temporary reign of power over humanity, but this power is not absolute. A possible reason for this allowance is to provide humanity a clear choice between good and evil. But people are easily deceived, like Adam and Eve, because of the enticement to self-glorification set against recognizing God’s glory.

The temptation was essentially to transform the kingdom of God into an earthly kingdom. If Jesus submitted to this temptation, he would be distrusting the plan of the Father. This temptation had an unacceptable condition: worship the devil. The people and rulers of the world have given into this temptation and turned to the false promises of Satan, though they would rarely acknowledge this (Ephesians 2:1-2). The devil was twisting an important messianic promise found in Psalm 2:8: “Ask of me, and I will give the nations as your inheritance, and the ends of the earth your possession.” Jesus was tempted to sell his birthright like Esau. Jesus was born King of kings. If the devil could get Jesus to forfeit his position and sovereignty, then the devil would win.

Jesus responded with another quotation of Scripture from Deuteronomy 6:13. This verse gives the core statement of faith of every Jew. It is the central confession of faith that acknowledges God’s total sovereignty. Jesus’ answer is the one we must always give to temptation and is the essence of what it means to be God’s creatures. Satan may not always want to replace God; this would be unacceptable to us; he just wants to come alongside God. Jesus would have no part of Satan’s scheme and no place in his thinking! Jesus’ plans for the kingdom were different than Satan’s. Jesus’ journey ahead would bring great suffering for humanity instead of the glory the world seeks through power and control.

For older posts, click here.

Luke 4:5-6 Luke 4:5–8 5And after bringing him up, the devil showed him all the kingdoms of the inhabited world in a moment of time 6and said to him, “To you I will give all this authority and their glory, because to me it has been delivered, and I give it to whom I want. 7If […]

[3

post-11170","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-devotions","post-preview
["GET
