Luke 8:4-8 4<\/sup>And when a great crowd was gathering and coming from each town to him, he spoke through a parable, 5<\/sup>\u201cThe sower went out to sow his seed. And as he sowed, some fell along the path and was trampled underfoot, and the birds of the air devoured it. 6<\/sup>And other fell on the rock, and as it grew up, it withered away because it had no moisture. 7<\/sup>And other fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up with it and choked it. 8<\/sup>And some fell into good soil and grew and yielded a hundredfold.\u201d As he said these things, he called out, \u201cHe who has ears to hear, let him hear.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

One of the primary ways Jesus taught was through stories called\u00a0parables. Some of these stories are short and others are long. They often have a simple plot structure with good and bad characters in some type of conflict. The characters do not always need to be people but can be inanimate objects or forces of nature. The message of the parables is usually associated with what happens to these characters.<\/p>\n

The time of this scene is not given. Rather, Luke notes the situation and how many people from many locations had come to Jesus. This was a significant teaching opportunity, and so the focus is on what he said. The story Jesus tells is simple yet sets the direction for all his other stories. The key characters of this well-known story are seeds, and the plot revolves around what happens to them. Different adversaries may it difficult for the seed to grow. The parable has four simple scenes that would have been easy for a person of that time to understand and picture in their minds. The seed itself is the same in each of the scenes, but its growing condition changes.<\/p>\n

The first seeds sown along the path never get a chance to grow because people trample on them, and the birds come and eat them. The second group of seeds sown on rocks do sprout but lack good soil that holds moisture, so they seeds whither away in the heat. Moisture and good soil is needed so roots can develop. The third group of seeds do have both good soil and good moisture and so start to grow. But they don’t get far because the third problem of weeds choke out the good plants. Plants need good soil, moisture, and sun to grow well. The last groups of seeds have all three essential ingredients, and so they produce an abundant and almost unbeliever harvest. The right conditions allow the seeds to produce other seeds.<\/p>\n

Ancient people are often thought to have simplistic, unscientific thinking. Jesus’ parable clearly shows an understanding of how plants grow. \u00a0Jesus called for the crowd to think deeply about this simple story. They would have been able to picture each of the scenes but may not have understood the spiritual application. So, Jesus would go on to explain the significance of this in answer to his disciples. The right conditions will lead to an abundant harvest.<\/p>\n
