Luke 8:40-42 40<\/sup>Now when Jesus returned, the crowd welcomed him, for they were all waiting for him. 41<\/sup>And behold, a man named Jairus came to him and this man was a ruler of the synagogue, and falling at Jesus\u2019 feet, he begged him to come to his house, 42<\/sup>for there was to him an only daughter, about twelve years of age, and she was dying.\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

Jesus went across the Sea of Galilee, braving a storm, to teach his disciples an important lesson about trust and to heal a demon possessed man. The crowd back on the other side had been waiting for him, which suggests that the trip was quick, perhaps only a day long. It may seem odd that people would wait for Jesus, not knowing his travel plans. But by waiting, they show their eager hope and expectation of his presence again. They had experienced miracles and heard teachings that brought new life and hope, and these people wanted more.<\/span><\/p>\n

The next story comes in two parts. The story begins with the desperate situation of Jairus, the leader of the local synagogue. This story is interrupted by a desperate woman with a bleeding problem. Both stories are about Jesus caring from women in need of his touch, one twelve years old and just starting womanhood, and the other older who had been in great need for twelve years. The whole time the older woman had been in pain and misery was the whole lifetime of Jairus’ daughter. The number twelve is symbolic in the Bible for many things, including the twelve tribes of Israel and the twelve apostles. It represents completeness. Both of these situations were in complete need of Jesus’ touch.<\/p>\n

Jesus connected with people from all walks of life. Although some Jewish religious leaders rejected him, others believed. Jairus fits into this category as someone who believed Jesus could do something about his desperate situation. The ruler of a synagogue was one of the most respected people in a village. He would have risen to this position because of his piety and exemplary living in devotion to God and Scripture. Jairus saw power and hope in Jesus and begged him to come help his dying daughter. Jairus also appears as a family man who greatly loved his daughter. It was risky for him to seek out Jesus. Other Jewish elders could see what he did and ostracize him, and he could even lose his position as the leader of the local synagogue. Whatever the social pressure on him may have been, he deemed it more important to ask Jesus for him. His great faith shows up in the brave act of asking Jesus for help. Seeking Jesus’ help like Jairus is not easy; faith can be risky at times.<\/p>\n
