Luke 23:24-25 24<\/sup>And Pilate determined their demand be done. 25<\/sup>And he released the one who had been thrown into prison for insurrection and murder, the one for whom they asked, but he delivered Jesus to their will.<\/em><\/p>\n

Luke’s language gets more poetic and stilted in these verses, hinting at a bit of emotion on his part as he wrote this. He could have simply said that Pilate ordered Jesus’ crucifixion and let Barabbas go. But once again, Luke puts more blame on the Jewish leaders and makes Pilate look more like a pawn being played by another in a chess game. Pilate was not innocent. He did not follow his conscience in this situation but followed the politics, giving in to the demands of the Jews. Verse 24 implies that Pilate pronounced Jesus guilty but was only giving in to the demands of the Jews.<\/p>\n

The innocent man took on the guilt of the condemned man. The Jews would rather have an insurrectionist and murderer running around their city than the one who healed people and brought peace. Their priorities were totally backwards, all in an effort to keep their influence among the people. Their theology was all mixed up, and they had not studied their own Scriptures.<\/p>\n

The last phrase of verse 25 echoes throughout the ages. Jesus was delivered to death on the cross for a sinner, Barabbas. But much more, Jesus was delivered over for the sins of the whole world. Barabbas becomes symbolic for all people, for all have sinned and deserve death. Pilate and the Jews thought Jesus was just a crazy fanatic, like many others at that time. They missed the power and significance of that moment. But for those who later came to believe in Jesus as Savior, what he did on the cross becomes personal and opens the way to eternal life.<\/p>\n
