This short verse builds on his earlier reflections on love in 1:22–2:3 and 3:8. This verse gets to the top of the mountain of Christian ethics with the opening phrase above all things. All other activities, behaviors, relationships, and ethical questions can be built on the foundation of love. Two key points are made in this verse.

First, Peter once again uses a participle with imperatival force (echontes, “having”) to exhort his readers about havingconstant love for one another. Constant (ektenē) means unwavering, uncompromising, steady, and reliable in devotion to a cause. The verse echoes the thought of 1:22, though a different word for “sincere” or “earnest” is used there (anypokriton).

Second, this constant love is to be directed to one another in mutual community, creating a strong bond that overlooks human weaknesses, faults, and sins. Many conflicts and difficult situations can be resolved with love. Love is like water on a fire or a salve that deadens pain and brings healing. Love is above all things as the greatest gift from God (1 Corinthians 13:13). Love is the result of God’s grace in Christ towards us and a reflection of God’s own character (1 John 4:19). We experience love must fully when we lay ourselves on the altar as living sacrifices (Romans 12:1-2).

Love transforms everything we do. Internally, love transforms our natural pessimism, discouragement, and battle to survive, into optimism, hope, and trust in God. Love gives us a different outlook about who we are as God’s creation, made in God’s image with a purpose to live.

Externally, our love changes our relationships, how we respond to the trials and difficulties we face, and our ability to be victorious over temptation and sin. Love covers (kalyptei) many sins because we are willing to overlook the faults and sins of others. We love others like God loves us. We realized we have experienced God’s forgiveness, and therefore, we offer forgiveness and restoration to others. We are gracious and considerate of the weaknesses and failures of those around us because we realize in humility that we have done similar things. We cannot cast a stone at others because we realize our own sins. This type of approach to our relationships could bring much healing and redemption.

1 Peter 4:8 8Above all things, have constant love for one another, because love covers a multitude of sins.
