1 Timothy 2:5b-6
Christ Jesus, 6 who gave himself as a ransom for all people
Today is Ash Wednesday. This is not a holiday I grew up with. It was for those liturgical mainline or Catholic churches, not for the Nazarene folks. More and more churches are following this ancient tradition. There is a lot of value in this tradition. Minimally, this time of year should make us pause and reflect on Jesus’ sacrifice for us. We were dead in our sins, under bondage and servitude to the power of sin. Jesus gave himself so that we might experience freedom from the control of sin and freedom to love others. This statement in 1 Tim 2 reminds us that this grace is universal. No one is outside of the scope of what Christ has done. Everyone can experience salvation if they will only believe in the one who gave Himself for us.
