1 Timothy 4:10

That is why we labor and strive, because we have put our hope in the living God, who is the Savior of all people, and especially of those who believe.

“We have put our hope in God.” This is a powerful thought. I spend a lot of time with people whose hopes have been dashed because of illness. Their loved ones are suffering and dying. Without Christ, I am not sure where people can find hope. This verse is a sweeping assurance of all that Paul preached. He and other early Christians gave their life’s energy to proclaim this message of hope. If there is one thing the world needs is hope. Life is not easy for most of us. We feel sometimes like what the book of Ecclesiastes talks about: all in vanity. I see people of substantial wealth at times in my job. It is sad to see all that wealth come to nothing at the end of their lives. We cannot take our wealth with us to the grave. We labor all our lives, accumulate wealth and things, and then leave it all behind, often only creating headaches for our loved ones. Why not invest in something that will outlast this life? Why store up treasures on earth when we can store up treasures in heaven? We have a deposit now. This deposit is hope. Hope is the downpayment of what we hope to experience someday.
