1 Corinthians 1:22-24
Jews demand signs and Greeks look for wisdom, but we preach Christ crucified: a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles, but to those whom God has called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God.
We still have “Jews” and “Greeks” around today. “Jews” are people who want proof of God’s existence. They want to see physical evidence. They want proof that miracles happen. But just like the Jews of Paul’s day, “Jews” today ignore or reject the miracles that happen all the time. They explain away the miracles as accidents or random events in nature. The Gentiles of Paul’s day wanted everything explained logically. Many “Gentiles” today want something that is logical and can be explained by science. They want everything black and white, comfortable, controllable, and explorable by human reason.
The cross demolishes both perspectives. The cross is a mystery beyond human comprehension. It brings miracles to everyone who will put their faith in Christ. Paul explains this with the word “transformation” (Rom 12:1-2; 2 Cor 3:18). We don’t have to be smart to put our trust in Christ. Even the least can find hope in Christ. How about those with human wisdom and strength? Will they submit to the cross?
