1 Corinthians 4:15

For though you have countless guides in Christ, you do not have many fathers. For I became your father in Christ Jesus through the gospel.

The bonds between a spiritual mentor and disciple can be significant and deep. Blond is a strong bond, but faith is even stronger. Paul felt very strongly towards the Corinthians in spite of their problems and spiritual immaturity. He appeals to this close relationship in this letter, and particular, this section. There are times when spiritual mentors must speak strongly to their disciples. In order for this to be successful, there must be several factors:

  1. A strong bond in the faith.
  2. A strong personal trust, willing to listen.
  3. A strong willingness to listen to each other, which requires humility.
  4. A strong desire to see the best outcome for all involved.
  5. A strong expression of love in how any confrontation or correction is made.

By practicing these qualities, both the mentor and disciple can grow stronger in their faith in Christ. Paul places the obligation to change on the Corinthians. He offers himself as an example and urges them in creative and strong ways to accept his ideas. For us today, we must cover this type of situation with much prayer and do our homework in preparing to speak with those who need correction. Love (ch. 13) is the key ingredient that glues this all together.
