1 Corinthians 10:1-5

For I do not want you to be unaware, brothers, that our fathers were all under the cloud, and all passed through the sea, and all were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea, and all ate the same spiritual food, and all drank the same spiritual drink. For they drank from the spiritual Rock that followed them, and the Rock was Christ. Nevertheless, with most of them God was not pleased, for they were overthrown in the wilderness.

Paul shifts from himself as an example to ancient Israel as an example. He is reflecting back now on the exodus from Egyptian slavery described in the books of Exodus and Numbers. He makes two key points:

  1. The people had experienced tremendous miracles.
  2. In spite of this, they rejected God.

This is a serious warning for believers. It is not enough to experience miracles and and spiritual experiences. We must be remain faithful the whole journey in order to receive the prize of eternal life. We must not give in to temptations or grumble when life gets difficult. Paul connects the Israelite’s experiences to the Corinthians and all Christians by refer to the Rock as Christ. Don’t forsake the Rock of our Salvation by putting anything else or anyone else on the throne of our lives. He must be the Lord of our lives and everything we do must be done to please Him. If we start with this premise in our lives, everything else will fall into place.
