Revelation 3:14 And to the angel of the church in Laodicea write: ‘The words of the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the beginning of God’s creation.’

The last of the seven letters is written to the church in the city of Laodicea. This description of Jesus is again significant and symbolic. Jesus is call the “Amen,” which means it truly; “you can build your life on this.” He is the faithful one. What he says can be relied upon. His words come true. As the “true witness,” his testimony about the person of God is the truth. As the Incarnation, Jesus is the Word of God become flesh, human. These descriptions show the reliability of Jesus’ words. This should impact the Laodiceans by urging them to obey what is written in this letter to them.

The last phrase is the more difficult one: “the beginning of God’s creation.” This phrase should not be taken to mean that Jesus was the first thing created but that he was present at the beginning of God’s creation. Genesis 1:3 says, “God said . . . .” The word “said” was the Word of God, the Son, the instrument through whom God created. He was present at the beginning and all things were made through him (Colossians 1:16). This description of Jesus in this verse shows his authority and the authority of his words. The church in Laodicea must heed his words. We must also listen carefully to these words because they may apply to our lives as well.
