Revelation 6:5-6 When he opened the third seal, I heard the third living creature say, “Come!” And I looked, and behold, a black horse! And its rider had a pair of scales in his hand. And I heard what seemed to be a voice in the midst of the four living creatures, saying, “A quart of wheat for a denarius, and three quarts of barley for a denarius, and do not harm the oil and wine!”
The Lamb opens the third seal and the third living creatures sends out a rider on a black horse. It is interesting that the more recent symbol of a judge is one holding scales. Judges also wear black robes. We cannot say that this is what this rider represents, but we can at least picture this in our minds in our modern world. This rider measures out food. This may symbolize that food will become scarce and costly. Every part of life will be affected with this rider goes throughout the world. It would not take much to interrupt the food supply of many nations, especially the large cities. It would only take a few days for a city to go into chaos because of a lack of food if such things as war or electricity goes off. The calamities upon human continue to grow with the opening of each seal. Each seal offers humanity the opportunity to repent and see God’s hand at work. But, as humanity goes, excuses will be found for every calamity and people’s hearts will harden even more.
