“If anyone is to go into captivity,
into captivity they will go.
If anyone is to be killed with the sword,
with the sword they will be killed.”
This calls for patient endurance and faithfulness on the part of God’s people.
This is an odd proverb that must be read within its context. The repetition of the statement in reverse draws emphasis to the thought of the line. The second statement shows the assurance that the first statement will surely take place. The two lines together warn God’s people of two possible difficulties that those who do not have their names written in the Lamb’s Book of Life. Living as Christians in this world will get more difficult as we near the end of time. The dragon will be unleashed against the church and seek to destroy followers of the Lamb. Following Jesus may come at a high cost to us. Revelation seeks to encourage us to endure and remain faithful to Christ.
