Revelation 16:4-7 The third angel poured out his bowl on the rivers and springs of water, and they became blood. 5 Then I heard the angel in charge of the waters say:
“You are just in these judgments, O Holy One, you who are and who were;
6 for they have shed the blood of your holy people and your prophets,
and you have given them blood to drink as they deserve.”
7 And I heard the altar respond: “Yes, Lord God Almighty, true and just are your judgments.”
The third bowl brings consequences similar to the second bowl. The rivers and springs that provide fresh water now turn to blood. Life on earth depends on water. As the waters and the life within them die, it is a warning of what is to come. It is a sign to the world that the wrath of God has come.
The angel announces the reason for the blood. This is payback time now upon those who have killed the people of God. Blood for blood. God’s justice is sure. This should give hope and assurance to those who suffer for the gospel in this life. It is not in vain. It takes great faith to come to this point of total surrender even unto death. Even if we may not face death for our faith, we must have the same attitude of total surrender to the sovereignty of God in our lives. This is the essence of faith.
