Revelation 19:17-18 And I saw an angel standing in the sun, who cried in a loud voice to all the birds flying in midair, “Come, gather together for the great supper of God, so that you may eat the flesh of kings, generals, and the mighty, of horses and their riders, and the flesh of all people, free and slave, great and small.”
These gruesome verses describe the carnage that will result from the last great battle of this age called the Battle of Armageddon. These verses draw a clear contract between the power of human leaders such as kings, generals, and their armies, and the utter ruin they will experience at the end. Their dead bodies will be eaten by birds which will gather to feast upon the dead corpses that will lie around after the battle. Vultures clean things up. This is a disgraceful way to die. All human cultures have rituals for burial that honor dead leaders. But in this case, the dead will only rot and be eaten, no honor. All people will be treated the same, both free and slave, great and small. All humans are but flesh that can rot and be eaten by animals.
This is a sobering reminder of our small and insignificant life is compared to the awesome glory of Christ. This also reminds us of how short life can be and that we should make the most of life while we can. Our decisions now impact our eternity. This is the time to grow our faith. The testing of our faith is opportunity for our faith to be strengthened. This is not simply a black and white one time choice but a lifetime journey, what is sometimes called the walk of faith.
