James 1:12 Blessed is the one who remains steadfast under trial, for when he has stood the test he will receive the crown of life, which God has promised to those who love him.

James returns (James 1:2) to the theme of enduring trials. This verse answers the question, why endure trials? This is a verse of promise and motivation. What does it take to remain steadfast under trial? “Steadfast” has the connotation of immovable, sure, strong, able to stand up to pressures. To do this, whatever is steadfast must be anchored or secured to something strong enough to endure the opposition. For believers, our lives must be built upon the rock of Jesus’ words (Matthew 7:24). If we abide in Him and He in us, we will find security and strength to endure the trials we face. Any other foundation may and will crumble, particularly at the day of judgment. James may have this day of judgment in mind as he reflects on those who endure trials without forsaking their faith. The promise for endurance is receiving the crown of life. This life begins in this world, but the final crown of triumph and reward will be given on judgment day. God has promised this reward of life to those who love Him. The emphasis here should be place on the word “life” and not “crown.” Crown is only outward adornment that symbolizes the new life in Christ experienced in part now but in full for eternity. The only way to experience this life is through the source of Life–Jesus who is the Way, Truth, and Life (John 14:6).
