2 Peter 2:6 if he condemned the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah by burning them to ashes,and made them an example of what is going to happen to the ungodly;

This is the third example Peter has given in the way of warning to his readers. The story of Sodom and Gomorrah is found in Genesis 19. This sad story is about two cities full of immorality, homosexuality, and debauchery. The angels of the Lord told Lot, the nephew of Abraham, and his family to flee the city because God was doing to destroy it for its wickedness. Indeed, that is what happened. The warning is very clear: sin has consequences. The ungodly will be judged for their sins and face destruction. Why do people ignore warnings like this? They may think this is only a story that happened long ago and won’t happen again. They may not think that God judges like this because God is love. There is a new way of universalism sweeping through Christianity and other beliefs. Other people are so blinded by their sins that they ignore any warning God may give them. Their hearts are hardened by the deceitfulness of sin. Peter is writing to Christians who may have faced different types of challenges. One of those is false prophets and teachers who were distorting the faith. Their doctrines were not correct. They did not preach accurately about who Jesus is. We must keep our sight focused and clear on the person and work of Jesus Christ. Wandering from the faith will lead to sin and the enticements that trapped the citizens of Sodom and Gomorrah. A weak or distorted theology will deteriorate our morals and lifestyle, leading to judgment.
