Hebrews 2:11-13 For he who sanctifies and those who are sanctified all have one source. That is why he is not ashamed to call them brothers, 12 saying, “I will tell of your name to my brothers; in the midst of the congregation I will sing your praise.” 13 And again, “I will put my trust in him.” And again, “Behold, I and the children God has given me.”
The one who makes us holy can do this because he is holy. The Son is the one who makes it possible for us to be in relationship with the Holy God. This comes through forgiveness from sin and cleansing from the stain of sin. We are bonded together with the Son through faith and the Holy Spirit. This unity is powerful and transforming. Through the Son, we are adopted into God’s family (Romans 8:16; 1 John 3:1-3). We take on the nature of this family. We can be called the brothers and sisters of Christ. The author quotes Psalm 22:22 as support of this idea because this verse speaks of having brothers in the congregation. Putting our trust in God is a theme that occurs many times in the Bible. The author appears to be quoting parts of Isaiah 8:17-18 to support the idea of putting our faith in the Son and the resulting relationship with God that is begun. Trusting in the hope that Jesus brings is the way for us to be brought into God’s family. This relationship will bring sanctification, which is the requirement to go to heaven and be with God. We do not want to be ashamed of being called the brothers and sisters of Christ in this family (Matthew 7:21-23). Honor comes through trust and faith.
